Transportation That works for All
Transportation connects us to opportunity – to jobs, school, doctor appointments, to the grocery store and to our social circles. Canek believes in investing in a safe, efficient, multi-modal transportation system that is accessible for all users.
During his time on City Council, Canek has advocated for increased investments in public transportation and equitable distribution of Capital Bikeshare and electric scooters across Alexandria. He fought for improvements to our local paratransit system, spearheaded the fight for fare free bus service, opened a new Metro station at Potomac Yard, and has been a vocal advocate of dedicated funding for WMATA. He has supported replacing our City bus and vehicle fleet with more fuel efficient/alternative energy vehicles to reduce our environmental impact.
Canek represents Alexandria on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, where he was selected by his peers to serve as Chair in 2022. He serves as an alternate on both the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board of Directors and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Board of Directors. He is a past Chair of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) Access for All Advisory Committee, which aims to remove transportation barriers for low-income communities, minority communities and people with disabilities. If re-elected, Canek will ensure Alexandria continues to have a strong voice on regional transportation issues.
