Canek Named to El Tiempo Latino’s Powermeter 100 List

Alexandria, VA – Councilman Canek Aguirre released the following statement after being named to El Tiempo Latino’s Powermeter 100 list for 2019:

“I am honored to be named to El Tiempo Latino’s Powermeter 100 list alongside so many amazing friends and leaders I admire and respect,” said Councilman Aguirre.“The contributions of the Latino community to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the United States can be felt and seen throughout our nation’s history. Diversity is and will continue to remain our strength.”

Born and raised in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrants, Aguirre has worked with and advocated on behalf of Alexandria’s Latino and immigrant community since arriving to Virginia in 2011. During his three years in Alexandria City Public Schools, he co-founded a parent group for Spanish-speaking families at George Washington Middle School and helped launch a citywide family and community engagement program. As a community advocate on numerous boards and commissions, Aguirre has fought to increase Alexandria’s affordable housing stock, improve equity in Alexandria’s public schools, built coalitions to promote government transparency and accountability, and worked to increase access to care to improve health outcomes.
