Aguirre Statement on Unanimous Passage of His Resolution Calling for Moratorium on Rent, Mortgages and Suspension of Negative Credit Reporting

Alexandria, VA – Councilman Canek Aguirre released the following statement after the Alexandria City Council unanimously passed his resolution Tuesday night calling for state and federal officials to address the immediate crisis of rent and mortgage payments through a potential moratorium and to suspend the reporting of negative credit information by credit bureaus:

“This resolution signals to residents that we understand the reality facing our community due to unemployment or underemployment caused by COVID-19. Local governments are limited in how much financial assistance we will be able to provide as this crisis continues, we can't afford to pay everyone's rent or mortgage. It is our responsibility as elected officials to advocate for solutions that will provide for economic relief and help protect our residents, small businesses and landlords during and after this crisis.”
