Alexandria Educators Endorse Canek for Re-Election

Alexandria, Va. – Democratic nominee Canek Aguirre today announced the endorsement of the Alexandria Political Action Committee for Education (APACE) in his re-election campaign to the Alexandria City Council. APACE is the political action arm of the Education Association of Alexandria, which represents teachers and educational support professionals in Alexandria City Public Schools.

“I am proud to once again receive the confidence and support of Alexandria educators and support staff. Ensuring our students, teachers and school staff, and families have the resources they need will always be one of my highest priorities,” said Councilman Canek Aguirre. “If re-elected, I will continue to support efforts to increase equity and opportunity in our schools.”

During his first term, Aguirre has fought to protect Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) custodial jobs and supported efforts to increase funding to address school capacity issues and expand early childhood education. Prior to his election to city council, Aguirre spent three years connecting ACPS students and parents with resources to succeed inside and outside the classroom. He served as the parent liaison at George Washington Middle School where he co-founded a parent group for Spanish-speaking families before being promoted to help start the ACPS Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Center in 2012.

Aguirre's endorsements include: Latino Victory Fund; the Northern Virginia Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO (NoVA Labor); the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 26; the Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC); the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA); the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689; the Alexandria Firefighters, Inc.
