Statement from Councilman Canek Aguirre
“One of my proudest moments on City Council was becoming the first Virginia locality in more than 40 years to pass a collective bargaining ordinance so that City employees have a voice in the workplace. Because it was important to get it right, I called for the special session where my colleagues and I publicly went line-by-line to review the ordinance to maximize its potential and strength.
“I am proud that we have now passed three historic collective bargaining agreements for Alexandria's police, firefighters and labor and trades employees. I am also proud to have led efforts to provide City staff with a bilingual pay stipend and to increase pay for our librarians to help address recruitment and retention challenges.
“My commitment to workers' rights remains the same: I will always stand on the side of working families in their fight for living wages, safe working conditions, access to paid sick and family leave, and the ability to retire with dignity.”
